Outdoor Fun

Houston can be hot, but that doesn’t stop Houston families from getting out and enjoying our beautiful city. There are so many wonderful and wickedly fun outdoor things to do in Houston, TX. Whether your family is into hiking, biking, music, or ecology, there is something out there, outdoors, to be enjoyed. Check out some of our favorite outdoor adventures for families. 

Buffalo Bayou

Buffalo Bayou is a slow-moving waterway that runs through a diverse ecosystem complimented by a wide variety of flora and fauna. The area along the waterway includes hiking and biking trails for families interested in exploring this historic area. Kayaks and canoes can also be taken down the waterway on either guided or self-guided tours. There are ten different parks located along the waterway and Buffalo Bayou also offers boat tours that run frequently, offering a unique view of the natural landscape.

Discovery Green

This really unique and beautiful park is 12-acres and located in downtown Houston. It is a hub of educational opportunities and offers a variety of programming for all ages, including children, teens, and adults. Within the park is a 1-acre lake, interactive water features, a playground, amphitheater, and lots of public art. The Houston Public Library Express also resides in the park. Grab a book and a patch of lawn and just enjoy the sunshine on a lovely day! Discovery Green is perfect for a full-day family outing, complete with dinner at one of the nearby restaurants. It is also a lovely location for a casual or romantic date night.

Houston Arboretum and Nature Center

Just outside of downtown Houston, the Houston Arboretum & Nature Center offers a quiet pause from the hectic hustle of the city. Take the opportunity to bring your family into this calm, peaceful sanctuary to unwind and connect with nature. Visiting families can enjoy five different free hiking trails. There is an interactive Discovery Room the kids will love! Houston families can also learn which local plants they can plant at home to bring about butterflies, hummingbirds, and other local wildlife by visiting the Wildlife Garden.

Mercer Arboretum and Botanical Gardens

Nature-loving families can also enjoy the beautiful botanicals of the Mercer Arboretum and Botanical Gardens, located along Cypress Creek. More hiking trails are available here, as are picnic areas nestles among the dogwoods, orchid trees, and so many beautiful and rare blooms. Unique to this local Humble, TX attraction is a butterfly house that offers a special close-up of beautiful butterflies. Free admission.

Miller Outdoor Theatre

Outdoor Music is a must in Houston. The Miller Outdoor Theatre offers free performances, including classical and jazz music, ballet, musical theater, Shakespeare, and so much more! Pack a picnic and enjoy any of these performances and expose your family to the joy of live music and theater.
